Summer 2015 – St Saviour’s gardening club

After 3 years of visits from St Saviour’s Infant School to Alice Park community garden to learn about gardening and growing food, this year Alice Park community gardeners went to the school every week for 10 weeks to support a group of Reception children and their families in creating their own kitchen garden in the grounds.

The project was funded by the Director of Public Health Awards as part of working towards a Healthy Schools Certificate. Over the weeks, the gardening club transformed several of the raised beds as parents and their children cleared weeds, improved the soil, planted seeds, built pea and bean supports and created a permanent strawberry bed. In parallel the families took home seeds and tried out growing tomatoes, carrots, radishes and peas in pots and in grow bags on windowsills and on balconies. All their hard work was celebrated at the end of the summer as the families harvested the fruits of their labour.
